As big ambassadors for the environment and protecting our planet, we’re often asked for advice on sustainable working.
Work trends have changed massively over the last few years, and many business owners are now actively trying to reduce their carbon footprint.
To help you do so we’re sharing some sustainable work trends that will not only make a positive impact on the planet, they’ll save you money too.
We’ve worked some of these out ourselves, but have also worked with the very helpful Net Zero Now to measure our own carbon footprint and identify measures to reduce this. Our aim is to be net zero by 2025!
Go paper free
We no longer spend money on printing paper, stationary and other office supplies. You’d be surprised at how much this could save you.
Instead of using paper, we’ve utilised technology. There’s an app for pretty much anything you’d use paper for, including signatures. There’s very little need for wet signatures these days.
We’ve been paper free for years now and it’s really made a big difference. It goes without saying that it’s much better for the environment. It’s also improved efficiency across our team as we’ve streamlined and sped up our processes.
Cut out single use plastic
It may not be 100% possible for some businesses to go completely plastic free. But It’s easier than you think to reduce or phase out single use plastic in your workplace.
You could aim to cut out single use plastic completely, or take steps to reduce use in your office. It doesn’t need to be an overnight exercise, start small and create a plan. If you visit the Blu Sky office you’d be offered water in a real glass!
In the UK 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are used each year. With the average person using 150 bottles each year.
A really easy way to combat this is to give your team reusable water bottles and travel flasks. Whilst this will cost you initially, it may help you save in the long term and who doesn’t love a bit of merch?
Recycle
It’s a no brainer really, take every opportunity to recycle waste in your workspace. Set up designated bins for easy separation of different materials.
You can also look into upcycling, selling and donating any unneeded equipment, instead of sending it to landfill!
Instead of buying brand new, ask yourself if there’s an alternative. You could consider purchasing upcycled, factory refurbished or restored equipment. It’s not always an option, but if it is, it’s way better for the environment and it could save you money too.
Embrace hybrid work
There are many benefits to hybrid working, including benefits to the planet. Employees who work from home, aren’t regularly travelling to and from your office.
Cars and buses are estimated to contribute 45.1% of transport emissions. By cutting the need to travel daily for your team, you can help them reduce their carbon footprint. As well as the carbon footprint of your team overall.
We go a step further and encourage our team to have virtual meetings where possible, to further reduce the need for travel. If our team do need to travel, we support them with green travel options.
Allowing your team to embrace hybrid work and reducing unneeded travel, may help you save money on parking and other employee travel related expenses.
